Tynwald Primary School head Mr Sevias Mujere recently won the 2016 International Star for Leadership Quality Award in Paris, France. The Sunday Mail Bridge got in touch with him for an insight into his achievement and how he got to land the big award. Read on . . .

The Bridge: Congratulations on winning the International Star for Leadership Quality Award 2016.

Sevias Mujere: Thank you

TB: Briefly tell us what it is all about?

SM: This award is given to an organisation with a proven commitment to quality and is in a continuous quest towards excellence in its products and services.

TB: What criteria is used?

SM: For any organisation to get the award they have to score highly in areas such as Innovation, Marketing, Business Excellence, Leadership and Client Satisfaction. As far as Tynwald School is concerned, these are values very close to our hearts and they guide us in all we do.

TB: So what is the secret?

SM: The secret with success is that there is no secret! It is focus, determination and a huge sense of purpose on the part of the Board, staff and the parents of the school. Each of these groups have to pull their weight and focus at all times on the most important people who are the students in the school. The parents entrust me with their most valued asset – their child. The Board entrusts me with a multimillion dollar enterprise. The staff looks up to me for visionary leadership. So you see I cannot and should not disappoint all these groups.

TB: What do you think makes Tynwald Primary School unique?

SM: Our approach has always been to do things differently especially in the way we educate today’s child. Technology has made the world a much smaller place where geographical boundaries have become irrelevant and as a school we have to keep pace with that. We have to keep the children excited and focused and above all keep the performance levels high in the classroom and the sports field.

TB: Where do you go from here?

SM: The most assured way to fail for any person or organisation to fail is to live on past glory. We have won this prestigious award, we have celebrated but for me the real challenge is to build on from it in the coming year. Those who enjoy mountain climbing will always tell you that you celebrate when you get to the peak of the mountain only to realise that there is a higher peak to conquer!

TB: Thank you for your time Mr Mujere.

SM: Most welcome.
