Greater Harare Association of Commuter Operators’ secretary Mr Ngoni Katsvairo says Government should institute measures that do not leave kombi crews jobless when instituting mass transport policy changes.

He said: “At the moment, there are over 60 000 commuter omnibuses in Zimbabwe and each one employs two people who have about four dependants each. This means more than 500 000 people will be affected.

“By phasing out kombis, Government might do a disservice, especially in the current economic environment.”

Private transporters, mainly using kombis and even smaller vehicles, service the majority of the populace in urban, peri-urban and rural areas, employing tens of thousands of people.
