CHRISTIANS should go back to the fundamental principles of their faith to curtail escalating crime and moral decay, says Chief Makoni (Mr Corgan Simbai Gwasisa).
He made the call at the 34th anniversary celebrations of the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland in Rusape last week, where the church will soon resume construction of its first girls boarding school there.
Chief Makoni said he received an average of 15 cases of murder, theft and infidelity weekly.
“The rate in which morals are declining in this country is very alarming. Vanu vari kuba, vanhu vari kuroyana, chipfambi chiri kuwanda, vanhu vari kuurayana and we are pleading to you Christians to go back to the basics and do what is expected of you.
“I am sure if you follow what you believe as Christians, we can have a positive behavioural change in this country,” Chief Makoni said.
Chief Makoni said the major setback in the Christian community was that Christians who were expected to lead exemplary lives had double standards.
“What’s bothering us as leaders is that the majority of those who profess to be Christians are the ones who are doing the unexpected.
“Christians are living with two faces the one for church services and the other one for dirty works. Your forefather did great things; we are all products of the good works that the Anglican missionaries did. I attended an Anglican school and look at who I am today, a respectable man,” he said.
Head of Manicaland diocese, Bishop Erick Ruwona, supported the pleas, preaching about faithfully following the Bible’s dictates.
The two-day celebrations attracted hundreds of Anglican congregants from Manicaland, Harare, Masvingo and the Mozambican Diocese of Lebombo. The celebrations coincided with a diocese fundraising event.
Bishop Ruwona said the money raised would be used for construction of St Catherine Girl’s boarding school, which will be officially opened early next year.
