Three and going strong

The Sunday Mail

Desire Ncube —
THE Prophets Emmanuel and Ruth Makandiwa Invitational Concert and Awards (Permican) ceremony has shown significant growth over the past three years since its debut in 2014.

Attended by audiences ranging from Government officials to gospel music enthusiasts, the event was held about a fortnight ago in pomp and fanfare. With two categories dropped from last year’s list, artistes competed for honours in 13 categories.

A red carpet session preceded the main event which kicked off with a performance from Pastor Josh Kays of the “Ari pano” fame.

This set the tone for an explosive night with Oliver Mtukudzi, Tembalami, Nyasha Mutonhori, Michael Mahendere, Kudzi Nyakudya featuring Vabati VaJehova, Gospel Power and Janet Manyowa giving inspiring performances. Here are sentiments from some of the artistes who walked away as winners at the event.

I was now convinced that awards were not my portion but 12 years later, God changed my story. This is for every female artiste and all career women who had given up their dreams to social cohesion.

I hope to encourage them to follow their dreams, to do their best and leave the rest to God. These awards are my faith story and I will stick to it. Thanks to everyone who has been used by God to change my story. The dancehall awards, Ziwa awards and now the Permican awards are testament to my hard work and perseverance.

Janet Manyowa Best female artiste, Album of the year & Video of the year
I am definitely excited and feeling blessed to have been voted for and selected as the best in the respective categories. I believe awards go a long way in encouraging us as artistes to press on. I also see the grace of God in enabling me to be recognised amongst other great musicians.

Dr Oliver Mtukudzi Music ambassador award
I am happy with the award that I have been given, I was not even expecting it. I want to thank those who remembered me, and it is a good thing to be remembered while you are still alive.

It’s not a mistake that I have been given an award on the gospel front, I am a Christian and a gospel artiste as well.

To those who are still new in the industry, I urge them to work hard and be patient in life. Everything has its own time. There are no short cuts for legends. To Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa, I say thank you very much for remembering gospel musicians.

Pastor Josh Kays Song of the year
First I would like to thank God for giving us the song ‘Ari pano’. I believe songs are not composed but they are given to us by the Holy Spirit and we give thanks to God for that. Winning an award, wow! It feels great that people’s lives are being changed by our song.

Tinashe Magacha Best male artiste
God has qualified me for what I didn’t qualify for. I wouldn’t have made it without God’s grace. I am extremely honoured to be receiving such an important award.

I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my work, because I am very sure that every other nominee for this award was as capable if not more, of winning this award.

Heartfelt Worship Team Best live DVD recording
It’s an unusual feeling considering that it was our first time to be nominated on such a prestigious event and later on winning an award. We are grateful as a team, Heartfelt Family at large and to our leaders, mentors and spiritual parents, Apostle Tavonga and Pr Chipo Vutabwashe for taking us this far.

This came as a serious encouragement and its definitely giving us strength to do more. Permican awards are currently the biggest gospel awards in Zimbabwe and we appreciate their effort and great work to valuing gospel artistes, something that was not there before.

CCAP Voice of Mbare —Best traditional gospel group
This comes as a motivation to us, we have travelled a long journey and we are certainly sure that we have not yet won the battle, people should expect more from us with this encouragement we are ready to move on.

We never expect to win but we have won, this is the work of God, praise be to Him. The organisers of this event are doing a great job and very soon we will start to see progress in the local gospel music industry.
