THE death of netball star Besta Harrison Mvura last month is driving Netball Super League side ZDF Queens, with the team vowing to win this year’s championship in honour of the late veteran.

Mvura died aged 39 after complaining of a migraine headache.

The 2013 champions lost their season opener to Hwange Colliery when Mvura was admitted in hospital.

Since then, they have recorded three wins in a row and captain Rejoice Dingizela hopes they can go all the way and reclaim their place in the sun.

“I am happy with the start, we lost the first game because we were missing Besta and Carol (Matura) one of our senior players who was with Besta in hospital when she was not well,” said Dingizela, who had formed a formidable attacking partnership with Mvura.

But the goal attack conceded that moving on was proving difficult.

“Her death was a big blow to the team, but we can’t do anything other than accept it.

“It’s still hard for us, but we are trying to move on, we are the players left and we want to win the league for Besta because she was a fighter and a champion.

“With my new attacking partner Zelda (Jeremiah) we have done well so far, but there is still need to strengthen our attack,” said Dingizela, whose side has recorded wins over Waru Waru, Stanbic Queens and Beta Holdings

ZDF Queens assistant coach Moleen Mafusire also wants to honour Mvura with the championship.

“It’s hard. We lost our best player while Miriam (Mwangeyi) transferred.

“Yes, we have won our last three games but we are still struggling to knit together our play.

However, we expect to be in the groove midway through the season.

“We have talked to the players, everyone wants to win the championship for her but we know it won’t come easy, we need to continue working hard,” she said.
