The myth of the ghost cars

Tendai Chara —
EARLY this year, 15 people lost their lives when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a Hino truck near Dzandura village along the Harare-Hwedza highway in Seke. The police attributed the accident to human error. However, this particular stretch of road has, for a long time, been associated with the paranormal.

Since the days of the liberation struggle and up until the late 1990s, there have been claims of sightings of supposed ghostly vehicles. One particular place that has featured prominently with regards to suspected vehicle ghost sightings is the Hwedza/Marondera junction, better known as 10 miles.

Stories have been told of how locals who seek transport at this junction during odd hours often get entangled in the mystical world.

According to locals, those seeking transport to either Harare or Marondera during odd hours often find themselves in difficult to explained situations.

“What happens is that sometimes those seeking transport during the early morning hours might actually see a bus approaching. As is in normal circumstances, the bus doors will be opened and the passengers will take their seats. The bus then takes off and the passengers supposedly fall into a deep slumber,” explained Titus Chihota, a local.

According to Chihota, when the passengers finally wake up from the slumber, they will be horrified to discover that they will be seated where they would have been before the “bus” arrived.

Sekuru Friday Chisanyu, a traditionalist, explained these strange occurrences.

“There are so many places throughout the country where such mysterious things happen. This so-called bus is not the usual, normal buses that we use. Instead, this is an imaginary bus. The victims won’t be seeing anything. ln shona we call this chadzimira,” Sekuru Chisanyu explained.

He said the deep slumber that the victims fall into is called kubatwa negotsi-kotsi in Shona.

“Ghost cars have been seen ever since cars were introduced in our roads. This is caused by the spirit of a person who might have died in a road accident near the place where the strange happenings occur,” he said.

So beware each time you flag down a vehicle during odd hours. It might turn out to be one the many ghost vehicles plying the country’s roads!
According to Sekuru Chisanyu, this can also occur at sacred places where a person can be seen standing right in the middle of the road.

After stopping the vehicle to investigate, drivers will be shocked to discover that the supposed person would have disappeared.
Spooky!
