AT around midnight last Sunday, Saru Maromo-Zvirekwi received a call from a stranger that plunged her into panic mode.

She feared for the worst after a Good Samaritan called with news that her husband, soccer star Hardlife Zvirekwi, had been involved in a serious accident along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.

Confused and trembling, she rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital where the Caps United skipper was receiving treatment. “I kept on praying to God to take care of him. After seeing him at Parirenyatwa I got a little calmer especially when I discovered that he was not that bad,” revealed Zvirekwi’s wife at the family’s Waterfalls, Harare residence yesterday.

The 30-year-old Zvirekwi had part of his left arm amputated last Monday after he suffered injuries in a horrific accident that occurred on his way from Motor Action Sports Club.

He was discharged from hospital last Thursday and is recovering at home.

Yesterday, the 2016 Soccer Star of the Year was in high spirits as he spent time with family and close relatives.

Zvirekwi’s wife is confident her husband will bounce back.“Football is his profession, it’s our livelihood as a family so he has to come back and play. We thank God that he is alive. Apart from the amputated wrist and some bruises everything else is fine,” she said.“My husband is a strong man and I know he will bounce back. The doctors advised us to source for an artificial wrist once he fully recovers from the pain and I think we will soon go and check what’s on offer.”

Zvirekwi’s mother, Tsitsi, has stayed by her son’s side.“What happened is water under the bridge, we cannot reverse it. We are now praying for his full recovery. As a mother it hurts to see your child in such a state but at the same time I want to thank the Almighty for keeping my son alive. You can see he is recovering, we will keep praying,” she said.
