It was written in Coptic, we are told, and the good folk at the National Geographic Society had the good sense of putting it into a more understandable language so that we can continue to ponder on whether or not Judas was fulfilling a divine commission through that most infamous of kisses.
Good things can come out of bad deeds.
Take Judas Iscariot, for example. Now here is a character whose role all my eschatological training cannot get my mind to wrap around.
Look, the guy sold off Jesus for 30 bucks or so, and the Son of Man was crucified. Then the Son of Man resurrected and in so doing saved the world.
So if Judas had not done what he had done, would the divine plan have been fulfilled? Sure, some will say God would have found another way to bring his gracious mission to humanity, but the fact is it was Judas who did it.
The Son of Man, we are told, in that final feast told Judas to do what he must do and to do it quickly. And a few hours later a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane sealed the deal.
The Bishop is aware that Jeffrey Archer and Frank Moloney a few years ago penned a novella titled ai???The Gospel According to Judasai???, which is an attempt to give the world Judasai??i?? on interpretation of those events.
Then there is a tract by the same name which some experts say is a factual account penned by Judas himself and discovered in 1978.

Was Judas simply trying to exonerate himself? Was he the lowest of life forms, lower than an amoeba? Was he playing the dirty role no one else wanted but had to be played, kind of like the scum-bag doctor who tells you that you will surely die?
Itai??i??s a philosophical exercise best avoided on weekends like this when our hearts and minds are supposed to be dwelling on more straightforward matters of grace rather than questioning the Omniscient Oneai??i??s standard of right and wrong.
But can good things come out of bad deeds? And does that therefore make the bad deed good?
The conundrum plagued me as I read of Zimra Commissioner-General Gershem Pasiai??i??s chat with parliamentarians last week.
The tax boss told the National Assemblyai??i??s Portfolio Committee on Budget and Economic Development on Monday that: ai???For instance, an example which comes to mind readily, we all know the roadblocks that we have. Sometimes we hear figures of US$3 million, US$7 million, being collected per month from those roadblocks. That is the amount which finally gets to be accounted for, not talking about what goes into the policemenai??i??s pockets.
ai???And then at the end of the month, we have an issue with Treasury; they want money for salaries for the same people who are collecting (it at roadblocks) … but we donai??i??t get a schedule of how all those monies which are being collected elsewhere are being accounted for.ai???
It was stunning stuff; the kind of statement that journalists lap at and rush to punch furiously on keyboards that have suffered many a dull story and eked out countless tortured pieces on anything and everything under the sun with the self-assuredness of the indolent mind that can only operate by rote.
The Bishop found it in rather bad taste, however, and the tax lord must do penance. A couple of Hail Marys are in order.
How on earth can Pasi tell us that he is failing to collect revenue?
He has one job to do: to bring in the cash and avail it to Treasury. Just one job, Pasi, one job. Do it!
More worryingly, he essentially told us that the police cannot be trusted with roadblocks money.
Horror of horrors! Who then shall we trust? If the tax man doesnai??i??t trust the police, why should anyone?
Naturally, the ZRP is incensed.
Madame Charity Charamba rained hell fire and brimstone on Pasi, calling him the worst of all things that any man can be called. She called him ignorant.
Senior Assistant Comm Charamba, the police spokesperson, witheringly said: ai???The utterance is a big falsehood which is intended to whip public emotions against police in pursuance of an obvious agenda.
ai???Gershem Pasi is ignorant that the accounts are also tabled before Parliament and all the money collected by the police under the retention scheme is subject to external and internal audit by relevant authorities in Government just like anybody elseai??i??
ai???Gershem Pasi is given a task by Government which he is failing to perform, hence this blame to cushion his failure. He is on record of having exceeded collection targets well beyond those given to him by Government, and why is he mourning now?
ai???We advise Gershem Pasi to use the same methods he has been using to collect beyond the set targets.ai???
We are waiting to hear what the ai???obvious agendaai??? is, but in the meantime the Bishop is unimpressed with Madame Charambaai??i??s reaction.
Surely these are issues that can be ironed out amicably among State arms without recourse to using such vile language as ai???ignorantai???.
Unfortunately, the good lady is unlikely to belong to Opus Dei, and so mortification of the flesh is out of the question. But yes, a few Hail Marys would do.
These two very senior public servants have been very bad this past week. They deserve to sit in the naughty corner.
But they have served a good purpose.
We now know not to trust the tax man to collect taxes and the police to be honest with roadblocks money.
