The importance of an early goal has dominated local football debates ahead of the Warriors’ tie against the Taifa Stars this afternoon. With Zimbabwe going into the swim or sink encounter with a 1-0 deficit to erase, there appears to be belief in some circles that an early goal is a must. Last night, we sought the views of several coaches on the matter.
Most of the gaffers are of the view that other factors, and not just the early goal, will decide the tie.

Here’s what they said:
Methembe Ndlovu: Bantu Rovers and former Young Warriors coach
Home advantage is key everywhere in the world, especially in these international games; so the Warriors will definitely need the noise from the stands.
In any game, an early goal is crucial, but what matters is how we react if it doesn’t come. We just have to capitalise on any opportunity that comes our way.
Rose Mugadza: Mighty

Warriors coach
I think the game is in the Warriors’ hands, they can win it anytime. However, it will be good for them to score in the first 20 minutes because it will unsettle the Taifa Stars.

Lloyd Mutasa: FC Platinum
Football being football is full of surprises, but honestly, given our pedigree as a nation and from what I saw at the Chan finals, I am confident we can blow away the Tanzanians.

Scoring an early goal is obviously a bonus, but I am more worried about our approach to the game because the players have to play fully aware that the visitors must not score because if they do we are in trouble.
I salute Ian Gorowa for recalling the creative Denver Mukamba because I know he can shine on such a stage.

Joey Antipas: Chicken Inn and former Warriors assistant coach
Although we put ourselves under a bit of pressure when we lost away, I am confident the Warriors can pull through.
The perfect tonic would be an early goal because it would ease pressure from the fans, but if it doesn’t come, the players have to be patient because a game can be won at any stage of a difficult match.
