On that day we do not wear uniform

On that day we speechify and perform
On that day we clap and cheer
That day is 25 May
Africa Day

On this day we experience what culture means to someone. We are entertained by a youth parade in every possible venue and show people some mouth-watering dance moves. This is usually important as it even makes the old people sway to the rhythm. Also, for the first time in months the youth drop the usual ‘24 Karat Magic’ by Bruno Mars and dance to our own old school songs.

What’s fun without music? We drop hit from our own local singers like Jah Prayzah, Oliver Mtukudzi, Winky D and many more. They entertain us with music that make our feet move without instruction for free.

The singers also sing songs dedicated to our country and continent, proving to the people that even the old songs can bring life to the present.

The sport with the most spectators, soccer is seen at the biggest stadiums with the famous teams. We get to see action live and have a few drinks over it. We get to see back to back goals right before our eyes.

The way of expressing talent is through art and in Zimbabwe we hold Art Extravaganza. Craftsmen and smelts men craft wood, stones into magnificent portraits which a lot of tourist buy and even locals for their households.

They hold feelings and emotions. Not only that, they are also painters who show us the true meaning of colors by painting their way into our hearts.

Zimbabwe also proves on Africa day that music is not only made by the mouth, but also by feet and hands. Men and women, boys and girls, show us a bit of the baseline when it comes to traditional dancing done by traditional dancers.

Also as a day that we have Africa on our lips, people wear ‘ African Attires’, clothes that are twisted and turned to produce beautiful dresses, shirts and many more.

Modeling shows are performed to see who has the best outfit and prizes are given. This also gives people motivation to also have their own outfits made thereby making everyone wear an African Outfit.

To prove that we all respect 25 May, even schools give their times to the day. Schools however may not have full package of entertainment but as the children say “a full stomach is a happy one” they are given drinks and braai packs to enjoy with music. They are also educated about our country and Africa and give children the sight of respecting and loving our motherland.
