3rd ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL CONVENTION (23-24 Nov 2017)

The current Security Technology Environment continues to present challenges which are making organisations and governments increasingly aware that the type of threats they seek to prevent has changed irrevocably. Many organisations have fallen victims to a string of unpredictable forms of material loss and financial fraud which are compounded by cyber-attacks; Yahoo saw their share value fallen by $350 billion over 48 hours after the largest security breach in history was revealed; The FBI and Apple went to war on encryption and were left in chaos when a smartlock update went wrong (reported in ASIS’s security magazine, October 2017).

Due to the absence of strong security institutional framework in Zimbabwe there is glaring lack of collected data on the state of our own private security and loss management statistics.

However, examples of unreported cases exist where organisations and government departments have fallen victim to computer based fraud and cyber-attacks of one form or the other.

We are not privileged to reveal these examples for client confidentiality reasons.

The above represent a pivotal theme, the need for all those influencing corporate security and loss management functions to adapt and to reflect on the more complex world, and the ever-closer convergence of physical and cyber security.

The time is now for the loss control and security management professionals to integrate knowledge and technologies to safeguard corporate assets, property, information and infrastructure.

To do this the profession must transform its expertise in a more systematic and developmental focused way.

Professionals must be able to access and provide solutions. They must commit to creating more efficient systems in a secure corporate environment.

Transformation for the Loss Management and Private Security Industry — the way to go

For the year 2018, it is ICLM’s commitment to become the leading agent for the development of the loss control and security management profession that embraces knowledge that is compliant with current technology environment.

More than just a prominent profession, the loss management function must foster the corporate security conversation, be the vessel that sets and carries the agenda and be the antenna for broadcasting the loss management and corporate security dialogue.

ICLM consider 2018 as the time for the inauguration of a transformed private security industry, promotion of high level loss management forums and showcasing integrated loss management focus including awareness of cyber-security.

When ICLM convention was first conceived, threats faced by organisations were merely physical.

The rest of the world has adapted to a new era and this is the year the Zimbabwe private security industry too must follow suit.

The private security profession must evolve to meet modern needs.

ICLM convention is gladly becoming the arena for private security and loss control continuing professional development discussions which are beneficial to delegates and sponsoring organisations.

Through the conventions the private security and loss control profession must discover solutions that are a driving force in protecting businesses, people and data.

Professional conventions give the security industry the platform to discover and display knowledge of literature, products and services and help corporate loss management adapt to the changing tides of tomorrow’s challenges.

Loss management professionals must drive the agenda. Going forward ICLM will therefore exist to lead loss management and security professionals in finding a platform for provocative debate on corporate loss management business and propel development of their knowledge of and skills in systems design, security equipment selection and installation, systems integration and end user requirements.
