“WE have brought the games home, now take us home.”
This is the message that the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association is sending out to the country’s representatives at the Zone VI Club Championships scheduled for Bulawayo in December.
The last time Zimbabwe hosted the tournament, in 2006, CBZ Jewels won the crown and ZVA president Ringisai Mapondera is praying that history repeats itself. We have Support Unit and Naba in the men’s category while Support Unit ladies and UZ Wolves are our representatives in the women’s category. They are competitive teams and worthy representatives.

“As a governing body we have done out best in bringing the games homes and the ball is now in the court of our representatives.
“They need to take advantage of being at home and win the tournament,” said Mapondera. Support Unit and Naba have both come close to winning the regional competition before.

Support Unit succumbed 0-3 to Autoridade de Tributaria of Mozambique in Maputo in 2014 while Naba were edged 2-3 by Botswana’s Police VI in last year’s final. Both teams will be confident of getting it right this time while in the women’s category Support Unit and UZ Wolves can bank on the experience players have in their respective dressing rooms.
Mapondera said ZVA are determined to have a smooth flowing tournament.

“We are expecting 20 male teams and 20 female teams to take part in both indoor volleyball as well as beach volleyball. The competitions will run concurrently from December 7-17 at the ZITF Hall while beach volleyball will be at Khumalo Hockey stadium,” he said.

“We appreciate what it means to host such a tournament and work has already started to ensure that we host a memorable event. We will play our part and urge the teams as well as the fans to play their part during the tournament.”
