The Sunday Mail

Some of our dear readers have rightly noted that coverage on this column has been mainly pro-soccer when there are so many other sporting activities within the church.

“Your column is very vital, sport has become an integral part of the church because of its ability to bring people together and fellowship at the same time.

“However, I have discovered that you concentrate mainly on soccer at the expense of other sports like netball, volleyball and athletics which are happening in the church,” wrote a reader. Point taken. We invite religious groups to send updates on various sporting activities so that we cater for all.

And as mentioned before, The Sunday Mail Religion sports column is not limited to Christians, it is open to all religions.
Sports variety in DZ Glad Tidings Fellowship Church in Harare’s Dzivaresekwa suburb is starting their sporting season and congregants will participate in basketball, netball, soccer and volleyball competitions. Plans are also underway for Glad Tidings soccer team to join the Harare Christian Soccer League.

“We are starting our sporting activities but this season we will have basketball, volleyball and netball teams participating.

“The main reason for these sporting activities is for fellowship purposes. We also take advantage of the activities to evangelise to some individuals and for the past year it has produced the fruits.

“We also need church-goers who are physically fit, you need to be fit for you to be able praise and worship for hours,” said Mr Ambrose Malunga of the Glad Tidings.

PHD’s multi-talented teenager Ruvimbo Jaji is a 16-year-old girl Sodbury student who stays at Bhara Bhara in the Beatrice farming area. She attends Prophet Walter Magaya’s PHD Ministries.  Jaji says she is talented in both football and netball but is struggling to get an opportunity to go big in sport.

“I read your column every Sunday and feel I could use the platform to highlight my plight.

“I am looking for someone who can help me realise my dream. I am good at both netball and soccer but where I stay there are no opportunities.

“Hopefully, the launch of netball competitions at the PHD Ministries earlier this year might help open up other avenues,” wrote Jaji.
It’s action galore at Nharira Township The story of the intriguing soccer rivalry between the UFIC and Anglican Chivhu aroused a lot of interest in that part of Mashonaland East. More and more congregations from in and around Chivhu have suddenly awoken from their sporting slumber.

This afternoon, at Nharira Township some 30km from Chivhu, three teams will clash in an invitational tournament. St Paul’s Nharira, Daramombe (both Anglican) will clash against St Francis of Assis’ Roman Catholic team in a round robin tournament.

“Thank you for the column, after you wrote about our sporting activities we were immediately invited to play in a tournament at Nharira.

“Your column is helping many people to come back to the word of God through sport,” said Lloyd Mujukwa of Anglican Chivhu.
Let’s pray for our Warriors The Zimbabwe national soccer will be in a group of death when the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals kick off in Gabon on January 14.

The Warriors were paired against African giants Algeria, Senegal and Tunisia in a draw conducted in the Gabonese capital Libreville last Wednesday. Our thoughts and prayers are with captain Willard Katsande and his troops as they prepare for the biennial continental soccer show piece.
