Sports Reporter —
THE UZ Wolves dominated this year’s Harare Volleyball League awards with seven of their players making it into the team of the year during last weekend’s awards ceremony.

Support Unit’s Medla Mafuta was the odd one out as UZ Wolves made an almost clean sweep in the Women’s Team of the Year. Wolves Setter Matilda Dube won the Most Valuable player award, and was later joined by teammates Progress Gasa, Lisa Nyamdela, Melody Moyo, Charity Chikore, and Naslin Negomo.

The Wolves’ dominance was extended to the men’s category with Tafadzwa Keni also winning the Most Valuable Player award. However League champions Naba had a better representation in the men’s category with the trio of Tafadzwa Zirawa, Solomon Chinyani, and Gamuchirai Makawa making it into the team.

There were also places for Support Unit’s Charles Nyamasve and CBZ Jewels’ duo of Peter Collin and Deardricks Watch. In the media category, Brighton “Xavi” Zhawi of the leading family newspaper – The Sunday Mail – won the Reporter of the Year award.

Zhawi said the award is another demonstration from stakeholders that The Sunday Mail is the best newspaper in the country and that the paper is playing an important role in the development of all sports in the country.

“It’s an honour for me and the publication I work for to be recognized,” said Zhawi.

“The award is not for me alone but The Sunday Mail Sports desk as well.

“It is also another demonstration of what is already in the public domain that ours is the best newspaper in the land when it comes to sports coverage.

“Ordinarily sports like volleyball are ignored in the mainstream media but The Sunday Mail has shown that it values the development of minority sports and my hope is we will make stars out of all sports,” he said.
