STYLE CORNER: A better you through flawless make-up

The Sunday Mail

“THIS is why you must take her for swimming on the first date,” wrote Matthew Crunsman, a blogger who was commenting on the story of an Algerian man who is suing his wife for “psychological suffering” after seeing her for the first time without make-up on the day after their wedding.

MAKEUPWhich brings me to this week’s topic: Is make-up really a form of fraud?

The Algerian man seems to think so as he is suing his newly-wed wife for $US20 000 for what he believes was a deliberate act of deceit by the woman.

While there have not been any such lawsuits in Zimbabwe, the view of make-up as a means of deceit is eclipsing its intended purpose of enhancing one’s beauty.

On social media, pictures of “before and after” that are posted by professional make-up artistes are driving the debate.

There are mixed feelings on make-up.

Locally, the politics of make-up dates back to the 1980s and 1990s when women who wore make-up were stereotyped as people of loose morals.

As a result, older generations discourage make-up use while the more liberal ones usually opt for subtle make-up application.

The choice to wear or not to wear make-up is however entirely up to the individuals.

Instead of piling on make-up to resemble a clown, the current trends encourage natural looking make-up application so as to get a better version of yourself instead of deceiving people on your facial features.

Below is a guide on how to enhance your look naturally:

Natural glow with strobing

Strobing is the new buzz word for highlighting and will give the skin a natural glow. This creates the dewy bronzy look by highlighting your face with a bronzer. Contouring by creating shadows is now a thing of the past.

Bold lip colour

As seen on international celebrities like Rihanna and Beyonce, the dark lip is back in fashion. Tanaka Ngorora, a make-up cosmetics distributor in Zimbabwe confirms that a dash of colour on the lips is the 2015 summer trend.

No more hideous lashes

Some women wear lashes that look like a weave track, this is so uncool.

Instead of these lashes that are made of synthetic fibres, the new trend is lashes that are made of mink. Mink lashes are now trending. Zimbabwean make-up artiste Jackie Mgido of Vault Cosmetics enthused about the natural looking mink lashes.

The perfect foundation for your skin tone

Nothing takes the glam away from a woman than a pale facial skin and a darker neck.

The foundation choice is the most important aspect in seeking that naturally flawless look. Instead of wishing for a lighter or darker complexion, find a foundation that matches your skin tone and colour. If you swipe make-up on your face and you can trace the lines, that foundation shade is not for you.

High definition eyes

Wear the make-up, never let the make-up wear you. The brown eye shadow is trending while using eye liner to line the lash line is also the in-thing to define the eyes.

The new trendy look is simply not wearing too much make-up.
