NATIONAL Blood Services Zimbabwe in partnership with the youths from College View Seventh Day Adventist church last Wednesday hosted a one-day blood donation campaign in Chitungwiza.

Youths from different faith-based colleges including representatives from the United Methodist Church, Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, United Family International Church (UFIC), National Assemblies of Christ among others in Chitungwiza graced the occasion.

NBS Head of Planning and Recruitment, Mr Tichaona Saira said the donation had come at the opportune time as they normally have low stocks of blood during school holidays.

“We are grateful with what these young people have done today. This gesture will go a long way in saving lives. Our main donors are students from high schools so when schools are closed we face a lot of challenges especially the shortage of blood. But these young people have bailed us and we are so excited,” said Mr Saira.

He added that they were lobbying the event organisers to translate the one day campaign into a quarterly event for the benefit of the nation.

A representative of the organisers, Mr Phathisa Mavengere said they were driven by the cause to preach the word of God hence they came up with the blood donation day.

“We have an obligation to spread the gospel but we cannot spread it to dead people, as a result we address the needs first and in the process spread the word of God.

“This also acts as a national obligation, because as young people we are compelled to be responsible citizens, caring for other people and impacting lives,” said Mr Mavengere who is the CollegeView SDA ambassador.

Mr Alex Chinakira (AFM in Zimbabwe) who brought along 33 students from his college said donating blood is part of their social responsibility cause.
