South African Rugby powerhouse Sharks Academy are believed to be tracking Prince Edward Tigers’ outside centre Brian “Mato” Matoramusha.
The club last week sent one of its experienced scouts, Richard Dejager, to take a closer look at the 18-year-old at the just-ended Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival.

Dejager — the South African Rugby Union exchange and Sharks Academy co-ordinator — is a veteran at talent scouting.

Although he tried to play his cards close to the chest, Dejager hinted that Matoramusha is among three players he is “processing papers for.”

“Yes, Brian has caught my eye, but so have a number of other players. However, in terms of talent identification, I have seen about three players I really liked and have already begun processing their moves, giving the relevant paperwork to their coaches, headmasters and parents,” he said.

However, sources close to the move disclosed that the PE schoolboy is close to transforming from a Tiger into a Shark.

“That switch is as good as done. He has been given papers to sign, his parents, too, and everything looks to be in order,” sources revealed.

On his part, Matoramusha did reveal interest in a move down south.
“A move to South Africa will be a big boost for my career,” he said.

Prince Edward assistant coach Shaun de Souza has also come out with high praise for the youngster.
“Mato is a fantastic player who follows instructions and contributes a lot to the team. He was originally a 7’s player but we have turned him into 15’s player,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dejager, who has in the past facilitated moves involving the likes of Sean Chigumbura, Lenience Tambwera, Shayne Makombe and Matthew Simba Mandioma, has heaped praise on this year’s festival.

“There have been some good quality games and I believe Zimbabwe has a very rich pool of great players.
“However, there have been a few games where the match-ups were quite unbalanced, with one game in particular delivering an 80-0 scoreline.

“I believe that is merely testimony of the gap that currently exists between the schools and something which the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and event organisers are capable of addressing,” he said.
