NEWLY-ELECTED Zimbabwe Karate Union vice-president Sensei Mugove Muhambi has pledged to ensure that the organisation becomes more sensitive to the needs of athletes.

After years of doing business in the dojo, training others and competing, Muhambi was thrust into administration a fortnight ago during elections held in Glendale.

The 39-year old reckons after retiring from competitive action the next step had to take him into administration.

“I have always wanted to lead, impart wisdom and knowledge to upcoming athletes using the experience gained as an athlete,” said Muhambi.

“As one grows older and is no longer an active athlete, the only thing left to do in the sport you love is lead.

“It comes with its own challenges because not all athletes can be good administrators but this is one challenge I am ready to tackle head on.”

The fourth Dan black belt holder disclosed that his passion is in getting youngsters taking up karate.

“I hope to bring new ideas which will make karate get more recognition in the country and reach out to as many youths as possible.

“I am joining a winning team and will focus my energy towards the growth and development of the sport.

“It has always been my dream to make lots of noise about karate as a great sport. I also hope to expose more of it to our schools,” he said.

Muhambi joins an executive that comprises of president Joe Rugwete, secretary general Steven Charandura and treasurer Morag Flight.

He started practising karate (Seido Kan) at primary school with Shihan Misheck Chiwayo as his Sensei.

Muhambi later switched to Kyokushin, which is a full contact style, under the watch of Shihan Tendayi Marange.

“From there things started to roll with medal after medal and trophy after trophy, and now I am a fourth Dan black belt branch chief for Kyokushin Kan,” said Muhambi.
