THE Seventh-day Adventist Church’s North Zimbabwe Conference, through its youth ministries, has embarked on an inter-denominational education programme dubbed “Nhaka Yeupenyu/Ilifa Lempilo”.

Under the initiative, the church is partnering Pace, Hillbright and Technifirst Colleges to offer free academic coaching in subjects that include Mathematics, English, Accounts and Science among others. The lessons are for Ordinary Level students who will be sitting for public examinations in November.

There are also Advanced Level lessons for pupils studying sciences, arts and commercial subjects.

The programme runs every Sunday from 9am to 4pm at Hillbright College (corner Enterprise Road and Samora Machel Avenue) and Pace College (corner Jason Moyo and Rezende streets). Technifirst

Pastor Morris Mlambo, the programme initiator, told The Sunday Mail Religion that: “As we have been evaluating our programmes and their effectiveness as the church, we have asked ourselves one question as to how we can make a difference in the lives of children living in poverty.

“And how can we further engage adolescents and better equip young adults for life? Fortunately, we came up with “Nhaka yeupenyu / Ilifa lempilo” an initiative that is aimed at equipping young people with education and skills they need to pursue their career goals and become productive members of their communities and churches.”

He added that though they were seeing significant academic and spiritual improvements in pupils, more could still be done.

“We are working with youths from a number of churches from mainline, pentecostal and apostolic sects. The room is also open for youths from other religions, if they are willing they can freely join us.

“We are planning to further this program through contextualised strategies that will include vocational training, mentoring, discipling, leadership training and more…

“The changes we are seeing in children are dramatic and even a little daunting but they also represent an unprecedented opportunity to make an even bigger difference in the lives of children as it allows them to reach their God-given potential.”

Pr Mlambo said they started the programme with over 100 students in early February and that number had since tripled.

“Besides empowering young people with academic knowledge we have dedicated an hour of studying the word of God with the young people. We are having devotions as well as Voice of Prophecy teachings, and young people are enjoying every moment of it.”

Pr Mlambo further stated that they also had a partnership with the Vehicle Inspection Department through which they are offering provincial driver’s license lessons to the youths.

“This is another area which is luring young people. They are very much interested in it,” he said.
