THE player who is alleged to have led to Leadme Muhlohla’s shocking departure from Harare City ladies volleyball team insists that she is sad to see the coach walk away.

Muhlohla led City to every title on offer last season but his contract was not renewed amid talk that he had lost the dressing room power game to 23-year-old Rutendo Chirikure.

In confirming his departure a fortnight ago, Muhlohla hinted that the executive had chosen to protect Chirikure after he had recommended that she be sent packing.

However, the club argues that they did not renew the treble-winning coach’s contract for financial reasons.

Chirikure was accused of indiscipline, especially during the Zone VI Games in Bulawayo in December, but the libero last week told The Sunday Mail Sport she had nothing against her former gaffer.

“The allegations were alarming . . .  but I have nothing against coach Leadme. I really wish him well in his life and endeavours. The non-renewal of his contract was unfortunate. He is indeed a great loss to the team,” she said.

“I really don’t have a long history in volleyball specifically, but since primary school (at Vainona) I was always a sports person doing athletics, basketball, soccer, netball and volleyball. “It’s safe to say I was a jack of all trades. Through sport, I managed to land various leadership roles throughout my schooling days . . . I was a sports prefect in primary and in high school (St Dominic’s Girls High, 2009-2012).

“I decided to pursue volleyball because of my coach and “Father” Martin Dururu at Junior Starz Harare Volleyball Club in 2010. After graduation from high school I fell into the hands of another great coach, Sindiso Phiri.

“Benefiting from the expertise of these two volleyball coaching giants made me grow as a volleyball player which eventually landed me a spot on the Harare City Volleyball team last year,” she said.

Chirikure is a Media and Studies degree holder from the Midlands State University who would love to have “a feel of the newsroom”.

“Right now I am doing consultancy for an education agent. I am more inclined to public relations and marketing as compared to journalism but I wouldn’t mind getting a feel of the newsroom sometime,” she said.

Chirikure is also keen to move on from the Muhlohla episode and is already focusing on the African Club Championships set for Egypt next month.

“It’s really exciting for the club and the Zimbabwe volleyball fraternity at large. Right now my main focus is to make the team because as it stands no one has a guaranteed slot among the travelling squad,” she said.
