Riots are a fairly common occurrence in some of the world’s most notorious prisons.

Last month, over 2 000 inmates at Willacy County Correctional Center in Texas in the US revolted over poor cell conditions and took over the prison for over 24 hours.

Disturbances began when inmates refused to report to work or for breakfast. They used pipes as weapons and during the melee two officers and three inmates sustained injuries.

Police were called in to quell the revolt using non-lethal weapons such as tear gas and water cannons.

This month, four people were killed and 10 others injured when inmates in a northern Afghanistan prison attacked guards.

The violence occurred as officers at the jail in Jowzjan province were searching for knives and other contraband.

In 2013, 13 people were killed and 65 injured in a prison riot in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. The riot started when a fight broke out between rival gangs.

In Venezuela, 61 people died at Uribana Prison following a two-day riot two years ago. It was reportedly triggered by an media reports that the military would search the prison for contraband.

The inmates attacked military officers who then opened fire. Most injuries were from gunshot wounds.

A year earlier, 25 people were killed during a riot at the Yare I Prison Complex in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. A shooting incident between gangs triggered the riot. Among those injured during the incident were 29 inmates and 14 visitors.
