RASTAFARIANS will next year begin construction of their first technical college in Zimbabwe.
The college will be in Chitungwiza, Chaminuka Rastafari House of the Nyahbinghi Order chairperson Tafadzwa Malowa said.
The tertiary institution will offer technical skills to Rastafarians from Dzimbadzemabwe, Marcus Garvey, Marondera and Bulawayo houses, among others.
Courses to be offered by the college include Carpentry, Crafts, Building, Drama, Music and Poetry.
This was revealed at the Chaminuka Rastafari House of the Nyahbinghi Order’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Chitungwiza last week.
“These celebrations are exciting because they have ushered in a new era in the Rastafarian community, we are growing. Next year we will start the construction of our first technical college,” said Malowa, known as King Shango.
“This is our first celebrations since December 17, 1995. Our elders founded this place and they decided to build a tabernacle here and every Saturday we gather here to worship and praise (the) Most High at this place.
“These celebrations are working as a platform to conscientise people about our way of life, our music and our food as the Rastafari people.
“The council gave us land for the purpose of building our college between Zaoga and Seventh-day churches here in Zengeza 3. Come next year the train will be in motion,” added King Shango.
Speaking on the turn out King Shango said they have invited a lot of people from the corporate world, the neighborhood as well as other religions but the turnout was low.
“The turnout is very low maybe because this is our first official event. The weather also affected us. People were concerned about the rains, but generally we are happy that finally we managed to organise this big event on our calendar.”
Entertainment at the celebrations was provided by Rastafarian artistes like Ras Blackman, Ras Jahman, Avalanche, Dadza D and Jah Bless.
Chaminuka Rastafari House of the Nyahbinghi Order was the first Rastafari house to be organised in Zimbabwe and last week’s celebrations were the first of their kind in Zimbabwe.
