The Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE), in conjunction with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, runs an annual Mathematics and Science Olympiad. The Olympiad is a competition in which “ A” Level students write exams in different Science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Computer Science. The purpose of these competitions is to prepare students for further pursuit in their respective subjects and to improve their scope of the subject, ignoring the limits of the syllabus.

The first round of the Olympiad is done at school level in which BUSE sends questions through Provincial Offices. Marking Schemes are also sent after the examinations have been written and schools choose teachers to mark them then submit the marks and copies of answer scripts to BUSE.

The university will then choose qualifiers for the final round to be contacted by the university at chosen provincial centers. The 2016 final round for Harare Province was done at Queen Elizabeth School on Friday the 16thof September 2016. Many schools had students who qualified in different subjects.

The Olympiad is intellectually challenging and promotes intellectual versatility since the questions asked require students to think outside the box and make use of the knowledge that they get from the textbook, the internet, the television, the old science magazine you saw in the library or the general knowledge passed to you by your parents or friends.

These exams also promote competition at a level field for all ‘A’ level students who think they can handle the heat of an exam and emerge victorious. They also promote courage and self-confidence in students especially those who will be preparing for final examinations.

In the competitions there are two rounds; the first round and the final round and a school provides five candidates who will participate per subject in the first round.

From the participants, the top 100 performers are chosen and they participate in the final round where the best are selected and awarded prizes.

From ZRP High school, 12 students qualified to the final round from the 14 students who took part in the first round.

Those who qualified from ZRP High school included Sande Lashwid, Matangira Malvern, Madamombe Gamuchirai, Matinya Kudakwashe, Taruona Kudzai L, Matondora Livingstone, Mujati Kundai B, Munzverengwi Mellisa, Masenda Tatenda, Dube Tendai M (Headboy), Madondo Rozeanne (Headgirl) and Warikandwa Ruvimbo H.

These students were accompanied by Mr B. Chirozva, a Mathematics and Technical Graphics teacher in the school.
