That mix-up is the stuff that the media, especially the lunatic fringe amongst us, feasts on with reckless abandon and with devastating consequences.
And so when reports of the mix-up filtered, the easily excitable private media with assistance from the opposition thanked their god saying ai???now we got our man, we gonna nail him.ai???
But then itai??i??s really true that ai???many times crisis results when composure is missing.ai??? While the private media was sharpening the spears, they were beaten to the game and before they knew it, the court of public opinion had lost interest in the story.
Letai??i??s face it guys ai??i?? that juicy story about the speech mix-up died too soon and too fast. The President was supposed to be torn apart. This was the confirmation that the private media had been praying for to show that President Mugabe was no longer fit to rule.
This story was supposed to dominate the news for weeks if not months. The social media was supposed to devour the President making all sorts of fun out of the speech mix-up.
For the opposition, the mix-up was supposed to be their resurrection. Morgan must have thought, ai???the deal is done, my boys will finish this old man,ai??? while the not-so-sure Joice must have smiled saying ai???this is it, we are getting close guys.ai??? How wrong they were?
In just 47 words, THE STORY was dead.
The following 47 words issued in a statement by presidential spokesperson, Cde George Charamba killed THE STORY: ai???There has been a mix-up of speeches resulting in a situation where His Excellency the President delivered the wrong speech.
ai???The mix-up happened in his secretarial office therefore the delivery in Parliament should be set aside. The error is sincerely regretted and corrective measures are being considered.ai???
These 47 words stopped the tsunami. These 47 words reminded me of Matthew 8 vs 23-27 and kindly bear with me dear reader i need to quote this verse in full.
The verse is a bit long. Matthew couldnai??i??t shorten it, Charamba style. Anyway, the verse goes:
ai???When He got into the boat, His disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. And they came to Him and woke him saying, ai???Save us, Lord; we are perishing?ai??i??
ai???He said to them, ai???Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?ai??i?? Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, ai???What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?ai???
Let me quickly put a disclaimer here – I am not in any way trying to say or equate Cde Charamba to Jesus and I am prepared to take accusations that Bishop Lazarus is now a boot-licker, but the way the presidential spokesperson handled the speech mix-up reminded me how Jesus Christ rebuked the winds and the sea.
When the mix-up happened, it appeared as if ai???the boat was about to be covered with the waves.ai??? Many thought armageddon was to visit the Presidentai??i??s Office. Others saw the story refusing to die in the private media. The President was under siege.
And letai??i??s give it to them, the private media tried their best to play up the story and keep it alive. They really tried, but the 47 words troubled them. Just 47 words!
The 47 words said: ai???Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?ai??? The 47 words rebuked the armageddon and in no time, the speech mix-up died as a story. It did not only die on the front pages of the private media. It even died in the inside pages. This death was just too fast.
Away from the media, the avalanche was going to uproot human trees in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services. Even Cde Charamba was not going to be spared. Heads were supposed to roll. The opposition seized the opportunity and Nelson Chamisa wanted to know ai???who did this to our President?ai??? Our President? Really Nelson?
Well, heads will roll in peopleai??i??s heads and on the pages of their newspapers. Let me not say much for now about this issue because some people will say ai???Bishop munotaurisa too much.ai???
But wait a minute dear reader, those 47 words did not do the trick on their own. In his book entitled; ai???Effective Public Relations and Media Strategy,ai??? Narasimha Reddi wrote about the three Rs in managing a PR crisis. He wrote about regret, resolution and reform.
On regret, he wrote: ai???In the first act of communication, the management must say ai???we are sorryai??i?? and convey regret on what happened…
ai???By resolution one communicates what action will be taken to resolve the crisis…ai??? while on reform he wrote saying this ai???…conveys the message that things will be reformed and such crisis will not happen again.ai???
Cde Charambaai??i??s 47 words communicated regret, resolution and reform. He did not in a way try to be clever about the mix-up.
After discovering the mix-up, Cde Charamba did not panic or let me say he did not show any sign of panic. Reports say he was actually at the luncheon that was hosted after the incident and looking quite at ease.
But before going to the luncheon, Cde Charamba had done what all public relations gurus recommend. After the mix-up, he was the first out with the story. He gave those killer 47 words to The Herald online team and in no time, the private media were followers in a story that they really wished they could own and control.
One of the basic rules of PR says when faced with a crisis those tasked to manage it should be the first out with the story and they should keep the response short such that the story dies quickly.
When The Herald posted the magic 47 words online, there was nothing more to reveal and nothing more to excite the people. From then on, Cde Charamba spoke through silence. Deafening silence.
As his deafening silence spoke, Parliament followed procedures and the mix-up was sorted without much hullabaloo. Little men of pen and paper in the private media were disappointed. Of course they did hit the corpse hard but the story was dead.
This is the story of 47 words that killed THE STORY. That STORY can only be written now as an obituary.
