“It was a fantastic contest although we felt one day was not enough. We witnessed great battles and from what we saw, it is evident there is abundant talent within the AFM church,”. THE Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Overseer’s Cup Winners Cup, one of the biggest sporting events on the church’s calendar, sprung into life at Ellis Robbins High School lastweekend.

Twenty teams from Harare province slugged it out in front of thousands of sport followers who included former Warriors coach Misheck Chidzambwa. Harare West, Harare East, Harare North, Harare South and Harare Central each provided four teams.

Harare Central’s Kuwadzana, who had Taurai Musvora between the sticks, won the men’s soccer tournament after thumping Tomilson from Harare North 4-0 in an action-packed final.

Glen View dispatched Budiriro 5-3 after penalty shoot outs to clinch the bronze medal while their striker Martin “Kedha” Chirapa was voted the tournament’s best soccer player.

In netball, Domboramwari from Epworth edged Shiloh Queens from Harare North 27-14 to clinch gold while Manna from Harare East settled for bronze after beating Yobel of Mufakose in the third and fourth playoff.

El Shadai of Harare West were the volleyball champions.

Vice president of AFM church in Zimbabwe, Overseer Chiyangwa, was the guest of honour.

Executive secretary for the AFM Greater Harare Sports Danayi Dangarembizi summed up the tourney.

“It was a fantastic contest although we felt one day was not enough. We witnessed great battles and from what we saw, it is evident there is abundant talent within the AFM church,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Anglican Diocese Soccer League enters Week 18 this afternoon with a number of mouth-watering encounters lined up across the capital.

Mutemererwa is a staunch fan of English Premier Soccer League side Arsenal but he thinks Arsene Wenger’s Gunners will struggle to finish in their traditional top four this season.

But that cannot be said for Glen Norah parish, a team that looks set for top spot in the Anglican Diocese Soccer League Group B which has 11 teams.

In Group B, Glen Norah are unbeaten in 16 matches, they have accumulated 34 points and are the league’s second best scorers with 32 goals.

Mabvuku parish anchor the table with four points from 14 games, having conceded 50 goals which translates to a ratio of almost four goals per match.

A top of the table battle is raging between Glen View and All Saints parishes who are both tied on 37 points going into Week 18.

Avondale and Hatfield are singing the blues with five and eight points respectively.

The top four teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 Cup which will be contested on October 15.

The Anglican Diocese Soccer League is a very vibrant league with a well defined executive led by Chairperson Joseph Mubwadarikwa.

Patricia Majeru (vice chairperson), Tawanda Mutemererwa (secretary), George Nachamba (treasurer) complete the executive whose patron is Reverend Father Tapiwa Gusha.
