THERE are no shortcuts in sport and local administrators need to keep abreast with international trends if Zimbabwe is to take its rightful position on the world stage.
This is the assessment of Sport Leadership Institute of Zimbabwe president Russell Mhiribidi ahead of this week’s summer management summer camp.
The highly subscribed event will run from November 24-26 in Masvingo and Mhiribidi disclosed that participants will be schooled on what the school curriculum means in their line of work.
“It’s a comprehensive exercise and at the end of the day we want to make sure that each of the 309 participants goes back to their respective base feeling like a new man or woman,” he said.
“The days of taking sport as a past time are long gone and examples from across the world have taught us that there can never be shortcuts in sport.
“Success at the Olympics or the World Cup doesn’t just happen, it’s a result of some hard work behind the scenes.”
The summer camp will also focus on event management, sport nutrition and athlete performance.
“Sliz advocates for a scientific approach to sport and we have lined up several experts to speak on issues that we seem to take for granted.
“How an athlete performs can be affected by diet and in pursuant of the need to make sure that our administrators appreciate this aspect, we will have a powerful session on nutrition and athlete performance,” said Nhiribidi.
Some of the speakers lined up include Dr Nick Munyonga and Zambian expert Sombwa Musunsa.
Earlier this year, American Professor Dennis Jones was in the country to facilitate a high-level international sports management course organised by Sliz in partnership with his West Virginia University.
Mhiribidi notes that the challenge is to continuously improve on the training programs his organization offers.
“We have to be responsive to the demands of the environment and the needs of the participants at all times. This is will be our fourth summer camp and we are certain that it will be much better than the last one we held,” he said.
