BARELY a month after finishing a credible fifth at the Comrades Marathon, Bindura-based long distance runner Marko Mambo is set to return to the track.

The 47-year-old will be the main draw at this month’s Lake Harvest Kariba Challenge; a race he hopes to use to prepare for the Two Oceans Marathon in September.

“My focus is to finish in first position and I’m working hard towards achieving the best in this run challenge.” “I hope the experience of my previous victory will help me,” said Mambo. The Kariba Challenge is a two-day event comprising men and women’s 20km and 10km Challenge and will be held in the resort town. Harare Round Table No. 1 are the primary organisers of the event, whose main objective is to raise money for various charities, notably the Kariba Animal Welfare Fund Trust (KAWFT) and the Tony Waite Organisation.

Despite being primarily a charity event, Mambo is expected to be the main attraction, being a three-time Two Oceans winner and one of the  country’s most decorated long distance runners.

“We normally get teams from various banks and some amateur runners, but this year we have managed to rope in Marko Mambo,” said event coordinator Robert Currie. “The ultra-marathon runner finished a credible fifth place at last month’s Comrades Marathon and will give some of our guys a good run for their money.

“There will be over 600 medals to give out at this year’s event, where the headline act will be the 21km race. “In addition to Mambo, we have also received a lot of enquiries from outside our borders, so we expect runners from Zambia and South Africa,” he said.

Mambo finished an impressive fifth in last month’s Comrades Marathon, clocking a time of 5:37:49 – 11 minutes and 40 seconds behind the winner.
