Six people were killed and 19 others injured when a minibus and Honda Fit collided head-on along the Harare-Chirundu Road early yesterday morning.

Four minibus passengers and the Honda Fit driver died on the spot, while the sixth person died on admission at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said: “The ZRP would like to confirm the death of six people in a road traffic accident, which occurred at the 111km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road, near Chinhoyi, on April 15 at around 0330 hours.

“Circumstances are that a Honda Fit vehicle was travelling due east towards Banket with no passengers on board when it collided with a Nissan Caravan which was travelling in the opposite direction with 24 passengers on board.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Honda Fit encroached onto the lane of the oncoming vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision and the Caravan overturned, killing four passengers on the spot.

‘‘Another died on admission at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital. The Honda Fit driver also perished in the accident.”

In another accident, three pedestrians were killed when an unlicenced driver lost control of his vehicle at the 60km-peg along the Birchenough-Mt Silinda Road in Chipinge.

The driver overtook in front of oncoming traffic, and rammed into the pedestrians as he tried to avoid a head-on collision.
