Nasty in-law takes ZTV by storm

NOT many knew about her work in the arts industry, which includes singing and a bit of comedy, but once she hit the small screen playing the lead role in the new drama series “Muchaneta”, Kessia Magosha has become the talk of town. Kessia plays a hot-headed daughter-in-law who lords it over her husband with an iron fist and is generally a terror to those around her.

“The acting started in 2004,” said Kessia. “I was an extra in ‘Waiters’, ‘Soul City Love’, and ‘Playing Warriors’; and I also had supporting roles in ‘The New Dawn’, ‘My Lady’, ‘The Team’, ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Fools Day’. I was also in the theater play ‘Tokwe Mukosi’.”

On how she landed a slot in “Muchaneta”, Kessia said: “The producer and director of the drama, Nick Zemura, saw me dancing at a funeral and asked me how I would handle a nasty mother-in-law if I had one. I said I would deal with her. From then on ideas started flowing and he said he was going to write a script, that is how ‘Muchaneta’ was born.

“When he was writing, he already knew who was going to play which part: Kessia Masona (Muchaneta), Admire Kuzhangaira aka Bhutisi (Josphat), Tendai Garwe aka Sokostina (Tambu), Eddington Hatitongwe (Bhaureni), Mai Bhasikolo (Vamarwei), and Rumbi (Lucy), and think this is what made ‘Muchaneta’ a success.

“I love the challenge of playing Muchaneta though I got tired of shouting at people all the time when playing my role. But when I watch it on ZTV I laugh at myself. Nick is surely a good director, he brings out the best in a person.”

However, it appears the actors improvise a lot and often do not follow any script. While this worked for legendary series’ like “Mukadota”, it has been a major weakness of “Muchaneta”. Many times a simple conversation plays out longer than it should as the actors try too hard to appear natural.

“The majority of the lines are scripted by Nick Zemura though he does not mind us putting our own lines and some additional stuff,” Kessia said.

The actress has a 10-track album called “Gumbomutsvairo”, which is centred on social commentary. Kessia said she would concentrate on both singing and acting as she loved both equally. “Besides ‘Muchaneta’, I am studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Development at Women’s University of Africa,” she added.
