MOTIVATION: Confront yourself as the year closes

WE all set goals at the beginning of the year. A few don’t do so, yet they expect success to come their way.

Setting goals and achieving them are two different things altogether.

It is no secret that 2014 is gone and we will be moving into 2015 in the next few days.

For every person who is serious about their success, this is the time when you want to ask yourself about what you have managed to do in this year.

The easiest thing for many people is to look for someone or something to point to when they fail to achieve their goals.

This might give you psychological relief, but it will not change the course of your life.

If you are going to experience change in your life, you need to learn to confront yourself.

There are people who are confident to confront other people but are not confident to confront themselves.

Many people pretend not to know why they are in situations that they are in.

We are where we are because of the choices that we have made.

You can choose to complain about how hard things are, like what many people do, or you can choose to think how you can turn the hardship into opportunities.

Indecision is also a choice, you choose not to decide. A number of times, the problems we are faced with can be solved the moment we ask ourselves honest questions.

You do not need a prophet to tell you that with the way you are eating, you are soon going to be overweight.

You don’t need a prophet to tell you that the manner in which you are running your organisation, you shall preside over its liquidation.

You do not need a prophet to tell you, you are corrupt.

You don’t need a prophet to tell you that you are not a trustworthy person and you do not need a prophet to tell you that you are sleeping around.

You know these things! Learn to face the facts no matter how brutal they are.

That is your only way out. Do not lie to yourself. You are not helping matters by doing so.

Lies console you, but they only provide room for the growth of the problem as it is left unattended.

Why are you in the situation that you are in at the present moment?

What financial decisions have you made that have seen you where you are? What are you doing that you are not supposed to be doing?

What are you not doing that you are supposed to be doing? Honestly answer these questions. You don’t just find yourself in stuff.

“In the long-run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility,” says Eleanor Roosevelt. You can choose your way into situation or you can choose your way out of it.

Corrupt people often want people to believe that they found themselves in corruption; the same way couples who engage in extramarital affairs want people to believe that they just found themselves in adultery; even a struggling business can blame its state on some other facts.

Yet in all these scenarios, there is a fundamental element which contributes to where people eventually end up, choices.

There is no one who was forced to be corrupt, corruption is a choice. There is no one who is forced to be lazy, laziness is a choice, there is no one who is forced to be a truant at work, and truancy is a choice.

No one just woke up with an extra maritalaffair; it was a choice that was made.

What choices have you made in the past? What choices are you making now?

“Be miserable or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice,” says Wayne Dyer.

The first things that will be presented are excuses justifying why one is where he or she is. Everyone blames the economy for where they are now; some even blame the economy for spending hours on television or even hours on WhatsApp engaging in idle chat.

Honestly if you are going to achieve greatness in life, stop being a cry-baby. This might sound harsh, but that is the truth.

You will not bring food on the table by reminiscing the story of winding up of your company, you do not change the course of affairs by complaining about how unfair the business environment is.

Your thrust should be on how to make yourself relevant in the business environment.

Figure this out, in the same economy that some people are crying foul, some people are expanding their businesses and even opening new branches. In the same economy where people are crying liquidity, other companies are increasing branches and services throughout the country.

“Too often in life, something happens and we blame other people for us not being happy or, satisfied or fulfilled. So the point is, we all have choices, and we make the choice to accept people or situations or to not accept situations,” says Tom Brady.

You can choose to be a victim or you can choose to walk out a victor. Your life, your business will change when you decide to take a stand for it, and declare that your future is in your hands, and you will not allow yourself to be limited by your situations, but you will rise above your situation.

Growing up I used to struggle a lot in writing, and written English was one of my worst performances, and not surprisingly I consistently got “Cs” through to University.

This might be difficult to believe, but that is the truth. It took one day for me to make a choice that I will pursue my writing passion regardless of my academic background.
