MOTHER’S DAY: Celebrating mother’s day with the rest of the world

“MAY she who gave you birth, be joyful,” reads Proverbs 23 verse 25.

Today, Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in celebrating Mother’s Day – there is no doubt that various activities have been lined up by those eager to make their mothers “joyful” on this special day.

Being a mother, that is, giving birth and nurturing a child or children is no small task. It is even worse when one is a celebrity or working mother – having to spend so much away yet trying by all means to be there for the kids.

Though, the arts industry is full of mothers, The Sunday Mail Leisure managed to speak to three phenomenal female artistes who shared how they manage the pressures of being a celebrity and a mother.

The three also shared what this day, Mother’s Day, means to them.

Gospel songbird Amai Olivia Charamba, jazz sensations Edith WeUtonga and Clare Nyakujara, all have busy schedules, yet they still find “adequate” time for their respective broods.

Being a showbiz celebrity comes with a lot of pressure – interference by tabloid-style journalists, keeping up public appearances and erratic work schedules. These alone can complicate the life of a celebrity mum if she does not know how to handle her status.

But somehow, the trio seems to be managing well and enjoying the pressure at the same time. Amai Charamba has been married for over 20 years and is a mother to five children. When the nation ridiculed her for being a baby-making machine, she stood firm on her decision and revealed that it is what she wanted.

Though many may wonder how she manages raising five children and buzzing in the limelight at the same time, Amai Charamba revealed that though it is a lot of work, prioritising and planning helps her overcome the pressures.

“I can’t deny the fact that I have hectic schedules but planning has helped me create time for everything that needs attention. Even though I’m conscious of my duties, my calling and the demands of the two, my family comes first,” said Amai Charamba.

The “Daily Bread” singer said she will always try to spend as much time with her five kids as much as possible. Whenever she is able, she picks and drops her kids to and from school. And even help the kids with homework.

However, she thanks her husband for being of great help as they practice division of labour and take up their different roles diligently. Due to their calling, the Charamba family conducts prayer devotion every night with their children.

Amai Charamba says Mother’s Day means a lot to her. “It’s a day in which women are recognised for their importance in the existence of humans. On behalf of all women, I truly appreciate it. Mothers are celebrated because they bring order in every aspect of life hence the saying ‘musha mukadzi’.“Mothers build and cement family units. God created women in general as helpers and that is an important role worth celebrating because there are a lot of things our husbands and children can’t do on their own without our help.“There are some mothers who aren’t aware of their importance and today serves as a reminder to everyone that mothers should be cherished,” said Amai Charamba.Bass guitarist and WeUtonga leader, Edith, is a mother of four. Though there isn’t much time on what she would like to call free time, Edith makes sure that she has time for her kids. The only time that she is able to do an extra-curricular activity or work on their projects is when her kids are at school. The moment their kids come back from school, its family time.

“I’m a happy hectic mother not only for my kids but for the rest of the people I work with. Motherhood is something amazing and it can’t be compared to anything,” said Edith.

Today she will be performing at a private function in Mabelreign in celebration of the day. To Edith, today is a day she sets aside to celebrate all women in her life.“Mother’s Day is for me a day meant to celebrate our mothers as it is only one day in 365 days. However, it does not mean that we have to stop there. I intend to celebrate the women in my life, that is, my mom, her sisters, my grandmothers, my mother in-law and my sisters that stand tall in the showbiz industry despite the challenges,” said Edith.

Jazz artiste, Clare Nyakujara, who prefers to be called Clare, is also a mother of three who juggles between being a mother and a performing artiste. Though, her job demands that she works mostly at night, Clare spends most of her time with her three kids.

However, she acknowledges that without the help of her house help, the situation could have been unmanageable for her.

“Keeping up with the pressure of working, raising my children and being a mother to them is hard work. You just have to be strong and patient,” she said.

Clare will be performing at Imba Matombo today in celebration of motherhood.
