More Chibuku, more super problems

THE script for this year’s Chibuku Super Cup must have been written by a drunk story teller.

The competition is staggering from one scandal to the other.

It appears as if every round comes with its own share of lunacy.

In the first round Chicken Inn stormed off the park at Ascot, protesting against a decision to award Yadah FC a late, late penalty.

The Gamecocks were booted out of the competition, fined US$2 000 and barred from taking part in next year’s edition.

Efforts by the Premier Soccer League to summon Chicken Inn coach Rahman Gumbo to a hearing where he is expected to answer to charges of causing the abandonment of the tie have drawn a ludicrous reaction for the drunken masters at Zifa.

The PSL summoned Gumbo after the referee of the ill-fated tie report that: “ The Chicken Inn head coach Gumbo instructed his players to leave the field of play before the penalty kick could be taken in what appeared to be a protest of my decision to award the penalty.”

However, Zifa in their wisdom – or clearly lack thereof -issued an ambiguous statement that seemed to suggest that the top-flight league has not right to call Gumbo to a disciplinary hearing.

“It is the ZIFA technical development committee that has the duty of licensing coaches, players and administrators and thus all disciplinary issues concerning coaches are, and should be handled by the association’s relevant judicial bodies, and not the league.

“Premier Soccer League officials are therefore mandated to respect and observe football protocol,’’ reads the statement signed off by the uninspiring Joseph Mamutse.

Mamutse, the Zifa general secretary who went on to accuse the PSL of setting up “parallel football structures”, appears in need of serious help, not just with his dressing.

As if the first round chickens drama was not enough last Sunday at Maglas we had some idiot – believed to be a Caps United fan – nailing assistant referee Thomas Kusosa with a bottle.

The controversial Kusosa sustained a cut above the eye, ran to the dressing room for sanctuary and Makepekepe’s quarter-final tie against Shabanie was subsequently abandoned with the hosts trailing 0-1.

The fracas at Maglas erupted after Kudzai Nyamupfukudza’s effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

Last week Caps made a comical attempt to “disown” the fans who rained missles on the pitch but more laughable is the manner in which their chief executive Cuthbert Chitima queried the decision to abandon the match.

“In five minutes they (referees) had made a decision that the game had to be abandoned and we wonder if it was something that was already planned or not,” “chief” Chitima was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, big Kenny Ndebele seems to have overloaded his massive tummy with Chibuku so much that he can’t even issue an authoritative statement.

There are times when Kudzai Bare’s voice is too light and yours truly expects Ndebele and the PSL emergency committee to know that.

In the meantime let’s drink on, hoping for a better day in the Chibuku Super Cup.

Drinking and arguing, as Sharuko put it the other day.
