Montclair Resort, Tuku to market Eastern Highlands

As the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) aggressively markets brand Zimbabwe to the world, smaller players within Zimbabwe are playing their part in popularising domestic tourism. Hotel and Leisure Africa Montclair Resort and Casino has partnered internationally travelled superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi to market the Eastern Highlands.

Tuku, who is the Tourism Ambassador for the country and is set to receive his diplomatic passport, is now the face behind the growing Tuku Golf Tournament and Shows that take place twice a year in Nyanga.

Professional golfers Tongo Charamba and Emmanuel Hungwe will be part of this month’s tournament, which takes place at Montclair Resort and Casino on the 14th.

Many companies from around the country, professional and amateur golfers, celebrities, business people and lovers of the sport, will converge in the serene misty mountains of Juliasdale, for the rare sporting gathering.

If the charming forests and mountains of Nyanga, and the ambience of the golf course itself, fail to mesmerise any visitor to the place, then a performance later that night by Tuku and rising star Tariro neGitare should do the trick.

Tuku, who is an exceptional performer, has promised a “night to remember” when he takes to the stage. Speaking through his drummer-cum-manager Sam Mataure, the superstar said it was obvious that he always gives blistering performances every time he takes to the stage.
He said the important part was in making sure that locals embrace domestic tourism. “This country is beautiful. We know because we have travelled to all corners of this country but even though, we still cannot have enough of the several wonders of this nation.

“It does not matter which province one is in, in Zimbabwe every province has something to offer and it is important that Zimbabweans appreciate their own country before they even start to think about travelling outside the country,” he said.

Tuku, who has been to all continents of the world, playing in capitals, top festivals and for royalty, says home is always the best.
“It does not matter how far and wide we travel around the world, coming back home and performing for our people, in our own backyard, is always memorable,” he said.

He praised management at Montclair for taking the initiative to combine sport and music, as it had the potential of seeing people travel to tourist destinations.

“Look at how many people are going to the (FIFA) World Cup in Brazil. That’s tourism and you will find that there will be plenty of music there because those two are very popular with people.”

Montclair marketing manager Tawanda Kwidini, the brains behind the Tuku Golf Tournament and Show, said there was a lot of money locked up in people’s bank accounts and homes because people do not know where to go and have fun.

“Our people need to be educated about the beauty of Zimbabwe and its various destinations. They need to know where to go with their families for a good time and spend their hard-earned money.

“The cause for many tensions in marriages and at workplaces is that people do not afford themselves time out. Time to go to Nyanga and refresh at a golf tournament or at a Mtukudzi show. To visit places like Mount Nyangani and Mutarazi Falls — to go into the game park and view game,” he said.

The Zimbabwe tourism sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
In May, the country was awarded the world best tourism destination and favourite cultural destination for 2014 by the European Council on Tourism and Trade.
