Growing up in Bindura, where population is just over 18 000, the urban youth dreams are usually confined to making the great trek to Harare, the nickel mines or the maize fields. 18-year-old Gamuchirai Kajeke, the new face of the Harare International Carnival, did not make the trek to Harare yet she still managed to excel.

Kajeke was recently crowned Miss Carnival at a colourful ceremony held at the Harare International Conference Centre.
Her story is a living testimony that all one needs to make it big in life is “hard work, a little timing and loads of talent”.

“A lot of people had been encouraging me to simply try it out and participate in beauty pageants, but I was not sure if I had what it took considering that I am just a simple girl from Bindura who had little experience and knowledge in modelling,” said the young beauty queen.

Kajeke said that her perception changed upon a chance encounter with famed Zimgossip Modelling Agency founder Mercy Mushaninga.
“My life changed a lot when I went to visit a friend at Zimgossip and bumped into Mercy. She convinced me to try modelling and taught me the basics, equipping me with the right grooming and poise,” she said. The just ended Harare International Carnival was her first contest and she beat a host of other talented and experienced models to the crown.

Now, the country wants to know ‘Who is Gamuchirai Kajeke?’
“I am an 18-year-old model. Growing up, we didn’t have much of the financial comforts most children have but we managed to get through and it gave us character (my brother and I). “My mother is a very humble person who taught me and my elder brother to work hard in order to achieve a lot and it is a lesson I have carried with me all my life.

“I was a very shy person when I was in pre-school, maybe it was because of my background, but in secondary school I joined debate and public speaking,” she said. She said the clubs she joined back in high school gave her confidence, a skill she holds dear until this day.
The fact that her mother raised her in a strong Christian environment has also equipped her with good morals.

“Even though I grew up struggling financially, one thing I learnt was never to compare myself with other people,” she said. Back in her school days, the young beauty queen was more interested in art and athletics. She did her primary education at Chipanze Junior School from 2001 to 2007 in Bindura.

In 2008 she went to SOS Hermann Gmeiner High School and Chipadze High School for her Advanced Level.
“I studied History, Geography and Divinity before I got a job at an organisation that deals with economic justice for young people where I am a programmes officer,” she said. She is also doing a part time job at Star FM. “When I was in high school I never thought I would model in front of a huge audience like what I did on the Miss Carnival night. I remember during high school entertainment nights, I only used to watch other girls modelling but I never participated.

“Miss Carnival was my first contest and when I won the crown, I couldn’t hide my tears of joy.” Gamuchirai says she is keen to pursue her modelling career.
