Mavima hunts with family

HE brings his wife, four-year-old son and his mother to watch his other family in action. In his other life, Munyaradzi Mavima is an engineer who has a busy schedule, but that tight schedule has failed to stop him from pursuing his passion in volleyball.

Mavima is the UZ Wolves men’s team coach who has transformed the college side from a mid-table team to serious league challengers over the past couple of seasons. A maiden African Club Volleyball Championships appearance in Egypt in April this year was the pinnacle of their fine run which saw them reaching finals of the Harare Volleyball League Association, National League and the Zone VI Championship last season.

The 35-year-old Mavima appears to be modest, saying glory isn’t his, but for the ‘family’.

“My wife Irene, our child Tadiwanashe and my mother come to watch our games and it means a lot to me.”

He has a demanding job as an engineer with a local firm, but he makes time for his volleyball duties.

“You have to plan, be organized and also trust your technical team. Sometimes I don’t attend training,” he said.

Mavima is also a ‘life coach’ to his team, which comprises of young players in their mid-20s. UZ Wolves take on Harare City in a National League fixture at the Chinhoyi University of Technology today.

It will be Harare City versus UZ Wolves family.
