Marondera has embarked on an ambitious project that will see a massive facelift of the town to match international standards.

The Sunday Mail can reveal that authorities in the town are reviewing their master plan crafted in 1983 in terms of Part IV of the Regional, Town and Country Planning act (Chapter 29:12).

In an interview recently, Marondera town clerk Mr Josiah Musuwo said they stood guided by President Mnangagwa’s pronouncement that local authorities should use sound town planning principles.

“The review of the master plan is meant to formulate the policies of Marondera Municipality as a local planning authority and the general proposals for the planning area in respect of the co-ordinated and harmonious development or comprehensive development and other uses of land,” said the town clerk.

Mr Musuwo said updated planning would be made to regularise land use, building construction and environmental conservation.

“The proposed review of the master plan has a lot of benefits, which include; land banking, incorporation of peri-urban housing projects and other activities that were approved and implemented outside the municipal boundary,” Mr Musuwo said.

Town planning expert Mr Percy Toriro said of the development: “Marondera is making a good move because most of our towns and cities are using very old plans which no longer match with the world’s developments. Old plans have lost relevance in today’s world and no longer talk to today’s problem.”
