Top seed Lucca Picci is on course to defend his Arenel Wimbledon Harare Junior Tennis Open tournament title after easing to victory in the first two rounds at St George’s College yesterday. Picci, who celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday, will meet eighth seed Alosha Chikanda in today’s quarter-final.

The top seed walloped Bongani Sibanda 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before crushing 13th seed Takunda Dube by the same score.
“I think I played well in the first day, I tried to get ahead of the game, I played good matches and they were quite easy games but I think the next matches will be tough,” he said.

The other boys U18 quarter-finals will see second seed Michael Gutu take on sixth seed Chigaazira while Derek Namanya (4th) plays Chriswell Sibanda (7th) and third seed Tatenda Murape faces ninth seed Keith Wakatoma.

The girls U18 top seeds of defending champions Zarah Finningan, Rufaro Chirema, Yasini Latifah and Tariro Dembo will get their campaign off in the third round today at Old Hararians Sports Club.

The Under 10s, 12 and 14 age groups will also continue action from the third round for the tournament ending on Tuesday.
Tournament director Linsent Chitiyo expressed satisfaction with the proceedings and confirmed that there will be medals for the top three finishers in each category.
