Birds chirp outside my window. It’s 6 o’clock in the morning, and I am late! I take a swift scrub and dress up. I dash out of the house as fast as lightning hits the ground. “Hyper, Saleshouse!” The conductors shout. It strikes me! I forgot my transport money! I have a mind to walk to school but I would get there by midday so I run back home with great stealth and grab my $1 transport money and head to the terminus.

As if my morning couldn’t get any worse, I get there and all the fast-moving ETs have all gone with the early birds. I frown as I board this dirty, old ET. The driver is taking his time! I have a mind to tell him to speed up but then I think of the elders around me; they would label me ‘an unruly child’. I think of the headmaster standing at gate giving us a big lecture whilst others are praying so that their day is blessed.

My blood ripples, turns torrent and as yet I am at the school gate. I pray that we only get detention and no lectures. To my dismay, the lectures pour in. Moments later, we all hastily rush to classroom. I stand by the door as I make gestures to my friends who sits by me. I ask her if the teacher is in but he notices me! The teacher calls me in and says I should stand in front of the class and apologise for being rude. My blood boils; I am fuming but still I am child with norms and values.

Hours pass by, it’s break time. We all laugh about the morning’s ordeal. It happens to everyone but today fate chose me! As if my day couldn’t get any worse, prefects inform us that all late comers to check in for detention. I am determined to pass my way through it and curse the alarm that rang very low! The bell goes, I walk to the terminus with my friends. In the ET, my spirit is lifted, I am intrigued by what I see. A group of children playing ball games, not far away, women carrying baskets filled with vegetables.

They have babies on their backs and they seem so happy and content; they chatter and laugh all the way to the market square.

This is life in Zimbabwe, happy people, busy schools and low ringing alarms! It’s a scramble but it’s fun.
