The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has bemoaned the rise in crimes of passion in Zimbabwe, urging women to desist from engaging in such behaviour.

During a live broadcast by Star FM at celebrations to mark International Women’s Day at Chikurubi Female Prison, the deputy officer commanding ZPCS Harare Metropolitan, Assistant Commissioner Elizabeth Banda, urged people to let love, and not anger, lead them.

“When women love, they love wholeheartedly. With the same measure, when that same love turns sour, they end up killing,” said the senior correctional officer.

This year’s global celebrations were held under the theme “Be bold for change”.

She implored offenders to accept their fate so that they are able to start afresh and make it easier for society to reintegrate them.

“We as women are supposed to be leading when it comes to matters of love because we go through a lot. Do we also ask ourselves what our children go through when they are stigmatised because of their parent’s actions?” she queried.

Female Prisoners Support Trust director Dr Rita Nyamupinga urged communities to embrace offenders and change their attitudes towards them.

On the sidelines of the celebrations, Star FM acting programmes manager Ms Itayi “Iyati” Takaendesa reaffirmed the leading broadcaster’s commitment to informing and educating society, including “forgotten” communities.
