Just admit you messed up, Phillip Chiyangwa

NOTHING pisses yours truly off that men, and women, who fail to take responsibility for their actions just like what Phillip Chiyangwa is trying to do with last weekend’s horror trip to Guinea. The guy is trying to subcontract his confusion to all of us, talking of how we as a nation could have done better in preparing for a trip to a “tricky destination like Conakry.”

His statement on the Guinea debacle is mischievous and an insult on our collective intelligence.

Chiyangwa rumbles on about this, that and those and falls way short of apologising for helping Guinea beat the Warriors in the last Group L Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Zifa president owes the nation a very good explanation for the drama that characterised the Warriors camp in the build up to the clash against the Sylie Nacionale.

Some of us suffer from BP (high blood pressure) and the now it’s on and now it’s off roller coaster ride he subjected us to over the Warriors trip made us very uneasy.

Simply acknowledging that the trip was badly organised and promising that the senior team will receive adequate preparations for the Afcon finals in Gabon next year doesn’t cut it.

And the act of trying to tie us all to the yoke that Zifa are supposed to carry was very mischievous on the part of Chiyangwa.

“I acknowledge that as an association and as a nation we could have done better in that regard as this impacts on the team’s performance,” the Zifa president said in his statement.

Wait a minute!

As a nation we could have done better?

Done better how?

Come on Captain Fiasco we are smarter than that and expect better from you.

There is no way the nation could not have done better because it did the best it could, coming in to rescue the trip through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and NetOne.

You had made a mess of things and the claim that Conakry is a tricky destination is an insult to our intelligence.

People travel to Conakry everyday, several airlines fly in and out of Guinea on a daily basis and there is nothing tricky about booking a flight to that West African nation.

What is tricky is having everything at Zifa revolving around your office, having a skeleton secretariat and one Joseph Mamutse as the acting general secretary.

With all due respect to Mamutse the office of general secretary, formerly known as the chief executive’s office, is too big for him.

Zifa needs a general secretary as soon as yesterday and if Kenny Ndebele is not too keen, eyes have to be cast elsewhere – yes Big Kenny might be a fine administrator but he is not the only one there is.

In the eight months he has been in office Chiyangwa has made promises – dresses and stands for the Mighty Warriors, a massive tournament in honour of the President and the coming in on board of a huge sponsor who is not Wicknell – but the one he made on the Afcon 2017 finals has to come with a “failure is not an option sticker.”

“I would like to assure the nation that we are working round the clock to ensure that the Warriors’ preparations for Gabon are as smooth as possible and this is despite the challenges that we are facing as an association in a tough economic environment.

“I must reiterate that the 2017 AFCON finals campaign is not for ZIFA alone, it is not for Philip Chiyangwa alone but it is a collective responsibility for a soccer loving country – Zimbabwe. I once again call upon the corporates, individuals and the Government to all join hands with ZIFA to make the Gabon campaign a successful one,” he said.
