THE only setback he is facing in Ngezi is that there is no Anglican Church in the mining area, but everything else is cool for Godknows “Zizou” Murwira. “So far so good, I am enjoying life in Mhondoro,” said the defender who joined the platinum miners from Dynamos at the beginning of the year.
“I am used to the mine life having played for Shabanie Mine a couple of seasons ago but what I miss sometimes are the church services because there is no Anglican Church here.
“However, when I always get time off to go back to Harare I make sure I go to church,” said Murwira, who plays drums at Kambuzuma’s Anglican congregation.
Madamburo are preparing for next weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup first round first leg match away to Recreativo do Libolo of Angola.
And Murwira – who is featuring as a right wing back in Tonderai Ndiraya’s 3-4-3 formation – is convinced his side can go far in their maiden African safari.
“We want to break records in the competition but first we must work hard. It is still offseason and we are still adjusting but I believe Ngezi has a team capable of reaching the semi finals of the CAF Confederation Cup,” he said.
The 23-year-old Soccer Star of the Year finalist has reunited with Ndiraya having worked under the gaffer at Dynamos in 2015.
“As a player you have to adjust to the coach’s methods and I think it is a blessing to work with coach Ndiraya once again. Remember, we played an almost similar system under him at DeMbare,” he said.
Murwira intends to use the CAF Confederation Cup to boost his CV and possibly earn a national team recall.
The former Monomotapa star was part of the Warriors team that travelled to Guinea for the final 2017 Afcon qualifier but returned home without kicking a ball.
“Who knows? If we perform well in this CAF competition maybe some of our players will be noticed internationally. Playing these high pressure games make one grow in confidence and it is that confidence that can then help one to mature. The target, of course, is to play for the national team,” Murwira said.
Ngezi players have been told to enjoy their African safari – but only a top four Premiership finish will be acceptable this forthcoming season.
Is it achievable?
“As for myself, I am used to targets because back at DeMbare the target was always to win the title. It is possible for us to finish in the top four, or even in the top two, but the key is hard work,” said Murwira.
