The SPAR Under-16 and Under-19 Inter-provincial 7s tournaments will be held at St Johns College in Borrowdale this week.

The event will be drawing some of the best players from all around Zimbabwe within the schools system to St Johns, all playing for a place in the Zimbabwe Under-16 and Under-19 teams that will be selected at the tournament on Thursday.

From the Inter-provincial 7s, the national representative Under-16 and Under-19 sides have been asked to partake in the annual Middleburg 7s in South Africa, where they will compete with some of South Africa’s best provincial teams in their age-groups.

In a statement from the Zimbabwe 7s camp, national team manager, Bruce Hobson welcomed the tournament that follows the Spar Sevens Series for National Rugby League sides.

“It is critical that 7s rugby is developed at a junior level for the development of the game,’’ highlighted the Cheetahs manager.
With Rugby 7s being an Olympic sport at the next Rio 2016 games, there will be an opportunity for Zimbabwe to compete in the
Junior Olympics in 2014 in China.

The present Under-16 group is being groomed to be the team that will lead Zimbabwe’s quest to qualify for the event.
