Municipal ReporterThe Environmental Management Agency (EMA) last week fined 130 commuter omnibus operators and businesspeople for breaching regulations compelling them to have litter bins in their vehicles and business premises. The fine is pegged at US$20.
EMA spokesperson Mr Steady Kangata said the campaign will be stepped up this week.
“We have made an arrangement with the Harare City Council that the anti-litter campaign will be done in phases and we will be stepping it up this week,” he said.
Mr Kangata said the law requires commuter omnibuses to have waste receptacles.
However, EMA and the city council seem to be singing from a different script in terms of the route the anti-litter campaign will take this week.
Responding to the progress made so far by council pertaining to the fining of offenders, Harare City Council spokesperson Mr Leslie Gwindi said: “We are giving them a couple of days as grace period then will start arresting the non-compliers.”
