THE inaugural Zimbabwe Economic Review and National Competitiveness Conference is scheduled to take place in Harare on Thursday this week.
The conference will be held on October 15 and will be running under the theme: “Sharing experiences in pursuit of COMPETITIVE economic transformation.”
It is believed that more than 300 international, regional and local business leaders, policy makers, development partners, investors and delegates will participate.
Conference Convenor Mr Kingstone Pumula Kanyile said last week the conference will see most government officials, head of many business departments, international and local investors among other delegates attending the conference.
“It (conference) will gather more than 300 international, regional and local business leaders, policy makers, development partners, investors and delegates to review and confer progress of the present fiscal and monetary policies in attaining sustainable economic growth and national competitiveness.
“Participants will evaluate how to attain; competitive investment destination status; from an Investors needs and perspective, competiveness in deflationary environments, a balance of taxation objectives in the Mining sector between Government revenue interests and
Investor returns.
“A strong balance of payments position by addressing productive sector challenges. Transition to National Competitiveness and accompanying economic transformation is evolving at a slower pace in Zimbabwe relative to sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia and to improve the prospects of harnessing higher economic transformation, the Zimbabwean economy must increase overall competitive productivity levels,” said Mr Kanyile.
Government is in the process of engaging both local and international investors to come in and inject funds into different sectors of the economy which include agriculture, mining, tourism and infrastructure among other key areas of development.
Among the key speakers are Confederations of Zimbabwe Industry Mr Busisa Moyo; International Monetary Fund resident representative Christian Beddies; Brains Muchemwa, an economist; Joseph Machiva, a renowned marketer; senior advisor of the Strategic Economic Research Program (Sera) in Zimbabwe Mr Ashok Chakravarti and Mr Davison Norupiri – Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) president.
“This conference gives people an opportunity meet with various investors, policy makers, industry decision makers, movers and shakers and share insights and provide thought leadership that will shape the future of national economic transformation and development of national competiveness.
“It will also set the platform to strike up global partnerships for development with leading investors, financial partners, development partners, industry regulators and policy makers among others. Participators will learn about policy options adopted internationally and regionally to attain accelerated economic transformation through competitive production, which expands access to markets and attracts investor confidence,” he said.
