How nightclubs got their groove back

The Sunday Mail

Many leisure spot managers have discovered that the simplest way of getting loyal patronage is to have themed days.

Here is how some of them are doing it:

Red Fox Mad Sundays

Red Fox Hotel in Greendale, Harare has been nicknamed “Kumarasta” after gaining popularity for being one of the best joints to listen and dance to reggae and dancehall.

There are other clubs like Gunners and Downtown in Highfield that are known for being reggae-dancehall hotspots, but Red Fox’s Mad Sundays – hosted by Judgement Yard Family – have remained a solid hit.

Sunday night sounds like an odd time to party, but Mad Sundays defy that logic.

The success of the concept can be attributed to the talented DJs and MCs who include DJ Flevah, Etherton Beenie, 2Bad, Irandu and Asha B.

Mad Sundays might have seen better days but the concept is still alive and many people still attend these Sunday gigs

Although there are no Karaoke sessions on Thursday nights at the City Sports Bar, there is no shortage of entertainment with the club dedicating the day to female patrons.

Ladies night sessions at this popular joint are characterised by good music and loads of exciting activities that include modelling, dancing and fashion contests with many prices to be won.

Hosted by DJ Danny and Ashley Black, this club is the place to be for those who like to enjoy all genres of music under one roof with a party vibe that does not recede till the end

The Volt Rumba Saturdays

The closure of Chez Ntemba left rumba lovers without a home until the introduction of Saturday Rumba Nights at The Volt.

While the concept is just a few weeks old, a large contingent of rumba fans have been invading the nightspot every Saturday.

With DJs Cavassy, Savane, Mnari and Werra, the sessions are super charged and the dance floor is always busy with party lovers showing off their rumba dancing skills. Organisers of these sessions have also included Zambian, Tanzanian and Nigerian music in the mix to add flavour to the party.

Centurion Disco Inferno

Centurion has established itself as one of the go-to places for party animals and Friday is a great night to be there with your dancing shoes.

Dubbed Disco Inferno and hosted by Chucknosis and DJ Candyman, these gigs are a must for those who are looking to have a great Friday night.

With Candyman playing dancehall, R&B, and hip-hop, Chucknosis is the crafty house DJ and the combination creates a cocktail of entertaining music vibes.

1+1 Ravel Saturdays

1+1 Happy at Long Chen Plaza is usually packed, and more so on Ravel Saturdays.

Since opening its doors to the public at the end of 2014, the club continued to attract patrons.

Selekta Base, Fujee, Blacksnizzle, TK Beats and MC Cut will be strutting their stuff behind the decks to keep the party going way into the early hours of Sunday.

Centurion Karaoke Thursdays

Thursday is the day that ushers in the weekend mood and despite the fact that people still have to go to work on Friday, fun lovers still go out.

There are numerous clubs around town that will be banging on a Thursday and among these is Centurion Pub and Grill with its karaoke sessions.

Karaoke Thursdays have gained popularity and the place is always packed with patrons taking turns to sing their favourite songs over pre-recorded backing tracks with the assistance of lyrics that are displayed on giant screens.

O’Hagans Irish Pub and Grill at Sam Levy’s Village also does karaoke on Thursday and these singing showpieces have proven to be not only entertaining but also highly popular.
