“MARRIAGE should be honoured by all and the marriage bed kept pure for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.’’
There is no other institution which God says should be honoured by all. It is only marriage which God says should be honoured by all. This means that everyone regardless of gender, race, marital status, age or religion should respect, value, esteem and treasure marriage.
In other words, there is no room for any debate on whether or not marriage is honourable. Any such debate has already been settled by God who declared marriage – honourable.
Not only has he pronounced marriage to be valuable but he has made it mandatory for everyone to treat marriage as such. No one has any choice over the matter.
It is significant to note that every scripture is a result of divine inspiration and is necessary for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
What is the necessity of Hebrews 13:4? It is to tell us to refrain from defiling the marriage bed and dishonouring the institution of marriage. This on its own shows how much weight God attaches to marriage.
People have no right to determine how the institution of marriage should be dealt with. Only God has the right because marriage is his institution. It is his idea and his product.
No one knows a product better than its manufacturer. God, the author of marriage knows and understands the institution of marriage more than any expert on marriage.
Anyone who manufactures a thing will put in place laws, rules or regulations to regulate or govern the function or behaviour of that thing with a view of ensuring that it gives or produces the best performance.
Any violations of these laws, rules, regulations or principles has serious consequences. For example, God in his wisdom placed fish in the water and put birds in the air.
It really does not matter what the fish think of the water, and what the birds think of the air. If they want to survive they have to operate in their respective spheres of sustenance.
Any attempt by the birds to live in water, and
any attempt by the fish to live in the air would be calamitous because it would be a violation of a God given principle.
God has put in place some principles to govern the institution of marriage. One of these principles is that marriage must be honoured by all.
