Government will embark on a nationwide blitz to impound all unregistered vehicles on the country’s roads that are prejudicing the state of millions of dollars in potential revenue. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Dr Obert Mpofu, said motorists have up to 30 days to ensure their vehicles are properly registered, failure of which will result in the State confiscating the cars.

“Members of the public are encouraged to visit their nearest registering offices to avoid congesting the CVR (Central Vehicle Registry) Harare office.

“All motorists with unregistered vehicles are hereby given 30 days… to regularise the registration process, failure of which vehicles will be impounded by law enforcement agencies,” said Dr Mpofu in statement last week.

The minister said it had been observed that most vehicles donated by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to various institutions and individuals a few years back had not been registered.

Dr Mpofu said a number of Government institutions, parastatals, private companies, co-operatives and embassies were using unregistered vehicles.

In terms of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14) section 6 (1 and 2), all vehicles should be registered with the CVR.

It costs about US$160 to register a vehicle while motorists are required to pay US$60 each year for a vehicle licence disc.

Change of vehicle ownership after a sale also sees a certain percentage of the vehicle’s book value being paid to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority.
According to previous estimates by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), the country as 800 000 vehicles but only 500 000 are properly registered.
