The Government is terribly unreasonable in its demands and should leave vulnerable mining companies alone. These companies are victims of a cruel and insatiable regime that demands more than is due to it. Why canai??i??t Government behave and let mining companies get on with it and then pay taxes? In fact just scrap the whole indigenisation campaign! This is the position according to the MDC. Is this a sincerely held view or someone is playing politics?
Playing politics in what way? Well, the MDC has built its movement on the Mugabe-must-go mantra and has had to sustain that line.
At the time of the land reform we all saw them working closely with white farmers to stall the process with empty arguments that the country was better off with a few thousand white farmers at the helm.
When the process went ahead we have heard nothing positive about the process from the MDC. It is in their interest for Zanu-PF to be wrong so if Mugabe says ai???this is a very warm dayai??? they will immediately counter and say it is not warm but hot.
There is a pattern to this and my mind has been drawn to the mining issue. Is Zanu-PF being unreasonable in its demands?
What about these calls for total ownership of resources and a greater benefit for locals? Are these legitimate aspirations or, as the MDC says, is Zanu-PF scaring away good European investors?
There is a succinct Shona word that perfectly captures this whole debate: shaisano.
The word describes a malicious method of operation where one would rather blow up the house than let anyone else live in it. If I canai??i??t have it, then nobody else can. This is why we have the ai???ai???tongai tiwoneai??i??ai??i?? refrain.
A very good example of MDC insincerity can be found in their own words once they got a chance to get into Government and were enjoying the trappings of power.
The following are remarks made by Tendai Biti in 2011:
ai???There is a misconception in this country about what constitutes a mining investment. They fail to recognise that mining and minerals are ephemeral.
ai???The people who negotiated the agreements could not tell the difference between loan capital and equity capital.
ai???There has to be a higher premium on a product thatai??i??s ephemeral. The Zimplats agreement is an example. The agreement is totally exploitative; it must be renegotiated and re-shaped. Itai??i??s not the only one.Ai?? Over 80 percent of mining contracts signed after independence are flawed and must be reviewed.
Itai??i??s not just in Zimbabwe where this is happening. In countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), mining contracts are being stripped and re-shaped.ai???
Wait a minute, is this Tendai Biti or he has been possessed by the spirit of Saviour Kasukuwere? Here is a senior MDC official saying, in his own words, that mining companies are exploiting us and that 80 percent of the current agreements do not benefit us as Zimbabweans.
Interesting.
Now you must understand the context in which this was said. This was during the GNU when Mugabe was busy seducing Tsvangirai and crew to the extent that a smitten Biti remarked ai???I canai??i??t believe this is the man weai??i??ve been fighting for a decade.ai??? So the MDC had its propaganda guard down and was speaking honestly on the issue because they foolishly believed that Mugabe was now their friend when in fact they were being manipulated.
The words spoken by Tendai Biti are in violent contradiction to shaisano campaign which has been renewed with vigour since the party lost the July 31 harmonised elections and was kicked out of Government.
The tone has now changed. The miners are good and everything Zanu-PF is doing is wrong. Well, the question is, if Biti thought that 80 percent of mining agreements in this country are exploitative, then what should Zanu-PF do about it, wait until the MDC wins an election so that Tendai Biti can fix it?
In an interview with ZiFM Stereo in 2013, the MDC shadow minister of mines, Abednico Bhebhe, ridiculed demands by Government to establish a platinum refinery.
He said it was unnecessary and that an MDC government would not make such ai???ai???unreasonableai??i??ai??i?? demands.
Last week we read reports of mining companies beginning to put in place the refinery as demanded by Government.
Following Bhebheai??i??s logic, this is a bad thing for Zimbabwe and if the MDC somehow suddenly got into power tomorrow, they would bring the exercise to an end. Are these sincerely held views or shaisano?
The final question readers should ponder is: what, if anything, does Tendai Biti propose be done to deal with the exploitative mining arrangements he observed during his stint as minister?
Can we have a robust policy proposal from the MDC as to how we should deal with such exploitation?

Now this is quite perplexing. HIFA was successful and very well organised, but the Carnival failed because we are viewed a pariah state? If the carnival is an exercise in futility because we are viewed as a pariah then how come HIFA is not equally futile?
The Ministry of Tourism should not bother with the carnival because it is a waste of time but HIFA which is operating in the same country is a splendid display? What nonsense.
More importantly, viewed as a pariah by who? Does Africa believe Zimbabwe is a pariah? Does South America believe Zimbabwe is a pariah? Does Asia believe Zimbabwe is a pariah? Has any Middle Eastern nation imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe?
It is the height of racial arrogance for Iden to elevate the minority views of white nations as representative of the views of the world.
The only countries that have a problem with Zimbabwe and have imposed sanctions are white countries.
This is an important detail. Iden must be pretty clear about this and stop peddling the dishonest notion that Brazilians or Indians have a problem with this country. They do not. Bishop out.
