FOR a couple of years now, the spiritual fathers debate has been raging.

lt is important to trace the origins of fatherhood in the Holy Bible rather than depend on human doctrine.

The origins of fatherhood can actually be traced back to the first book of the Bible – Genesis 31 verse 3 as well as in Exodus 3 verse 15 and many other Old Testament scriptures.

Fatherhood started during the time when God gave Moses the law saying, “I am God of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac”.

ln lsrael’s culture, elders of the house of Jacob were called fathers, not spiritual fathers. The law taught them respect.

According to Numbers 1 verse 2, God commanded Moses to make a selection among Israel in line with the house of their fathers.

Further, with the coming of Jesus Christ, the Lord told Israel how they trivialized the Word of God due to their traditions. Many didnt accept Jesus as the Son of God due to such traditions. They debated on whether he was greater than Abraham, Jacob and Isaac.

On breaking such a tradition, Jesus said, “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.” Mathew 23:9

The Lord Jesus was showing them that they had to depart from the tradition and accept God as the only spiritual father.

In John 4 verse 23 to 24, Jesus said God was the father and He was a Spirit.

God is the only spiritual father because he is 100 percent spiritual.

Jesus was called the Son of God because he was flesh and blood.

A man who is flesh and blood does not deserve or qualify to be spiritual father because he or she can only be a false god to the people.

Anyone who calls their pastor or prophet a spiritual father does not abide in the true doctrine of Christ.

Even Apostle Paul in Romans 4 verse 1 clearly stated that Abraham was a father pertaining to the flesh and not spirit.

It is also my take that a spiritual father is not only a father to human beings but is also father to angels and hosts of heaven.

Only God qualifies as a spiritual father, all else is tomfoolery.

A pastor can only be a brother in Christ because he or she cannot give grace to the people in God’s way.

Many people who believe in these spiritual fathers are in pursuit of financial gain rather than eternal life.
