ABOARD a boat on the mighty Zambezi River, the players who powered Glow Petroleum to last year’s Netball Super League title were handed their medals.

At a classy event, the Redcliff-based side toasted their 2016 success and also sent a statement to their rivals ahead of this year’s campaign.

It was announced that the champions had signed national Under-21 goal shooter Lynette Tanhira from rivals City of Harare, while talks with Botswana international goal shooter Hilda Binang were said to be at an advanced stage. Glow Petroleum chief executive Aaron Chinhara said apart from creating champions, his company was also alive to the need to empower girls and women.

“We are not just concerned about being the netball champions, we want these girls to be champions in life as well. At this platform I want to challenge other corporate entities to emulate all those who have taken the lead to nurture the talent in our youths. Let us all tap into the lives of these young ones for a better Zimbabwe,” he said.

Guest of honour, Zimbabwe Netball president Letitia Chipandu, hailed Glow Petroleum.

“The Super League games for 2016 were very tough; winning the league championship was no mean achievement. Glow Petroleum netball team are worthy champions.

“We have teams which train netball fulltime Monday to Friday but Glow Petroleum being part timers composed of students and employees did the unthinkable by beating professional teams,” said Chipandu.

She urged the team to continue dreaming big.

“In sport dreams become reality and everything is possible, the sky is the limit as some have become employed and have riches beyond their wildest imaginations through playing sport,” said Chipandu.
